Description

Prior to Ghana’s independence, currency denominated in pounds, shillings, and pence was issued by the West African Currency Board (WACB) and remained in circulation until July 1958. On 4 March 1957, just two days before the declaration of political independence, the Bank of Ghana (BOG) was formally established by the Bank of Ghana Ordinance (No. 34) of 1957, passed by the British parliament. The central bank’s opening ceremony was held the end of July 1957, and formal operations began on 1 August 1957, when the banking department opened for business. The issue department commenced operations in July 1958.
